Voting Problems in WV… *Updated

October 22, 2008 at 11:21 pm (Crazy Shit, Politics) (, , , , )

Nothing new here, just a bunch of old school politics that just can’t seem to be routed from the WV political scene.

The Charleston Gazette lead with the story about voters in two counties casting early ballots on voting machines having those votes cast to “McCain” when they touched “Obama” on the screen. More early voters have come forward to attest to this problem. Naturally, our good WV government says, “Everything’s okay, my little lemmings, just follow the others over the cliff.” (The evening paper – The Daily Mail – stuffed the story to page 5.)  * More voting problems reported in Martinsburg!  IF THE MACHINE YOU USE PICKS THE WRONG CANDIDATE, ASK FOR ASSISTANCE. DON’T GIVE UP UNTIL YOUR VOTE IS CAST CORRECTLY!

Of course, the biggest brouhaha is because the two counties this has happened in are Republican counties and the ones in charge of the election are Republican.  However, it shouldn’t matter what county it is, who is in charge, or what political party they are affliated with, everyone should be outraged. What if it were the other way around? Would you McCain supporters want your vote switched to Obama? Certainly not.

But, to say I’m shocked, I just can’t bring myself to say yes. West Virginia has been and perhaps always will be associated with some of the most corrupt politicians this side of New Jersey. For $20 and a pint of whiskey, votes can be bought. Hell, in this economy, $20 would probably do it. Our former governor, Arch Moore (father of current Congressional Representative Shelley Moore Capito), was found guilty of accepting graft and sent off to the Federal Pen for a sojourn. (He was a Republican, by the way.)

An associate of my old boss was also investigated, indicted, and plead guilty to a whole rash of vote tampering, corruption mongering charges and is currently doing time on Uncle Sam’s dime. (He was a Democrat, by the way.)

One would think that our government would attempt to bolster the image of our vastly underrated Appalachian state. Attempt in some way to erase the negative stereotype of toothless, ignorant hillbillies with one leg shorter than the other married to their cousin, spitting out babies, living on welfare in a trailer park in squalor, accepting a 20 and a pint to vote one way or the other.

West Virginia, per capita, has given more of her sons and daughters in the pursuit of freedom and the protection of the American way, than any other state in the union, yet allow those very freedoms to be trampled upon. For once, West Virginia, STAND UP FOR YOURSELVES AND STAND UP FOR YOUR FREEDOMS! HOLD YOUR GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABLE THAT EVERY VOTE IS CAST CORRECTLY AND EVERY VOTE IS COUNTED AS IT WERE CAST!

It doesn’t matter whether you’re blue, red, black, or white, STAND UP WEST VIRGINIA!

The first time Arch Moore was governor, my mom thought the sun rose and set in him. By the time he went to jail, she was deceased – and it was good she never knew of his bad side….LOL

Oh, Kenju, I have pictures of my dad’s mom with Arch Moore. He could do no wrong.

That reminds me, I should stroll thru the Detroit Free Press website and see who’s been nailed being naughty this election cycle.

Hell, up here, Arch Moore is almost a God – people are f***in nuts. Wheeling has already had severalcases of the Obama vote automatically turning to McCain. Again, the registrars are blaming the people as being inept and not knowing what to do. Right!!!!

People need to really double check their entries before hitting “vote” on the electronic machines. I always go over my paper one twice just to be sure I’ve recorded what I wanted to. I hope there is a serious investigation into this matter – whether it’s corruption on a political level or just computers having a mind of their own (as I’ve learned, once again, this past week….. LOL – that’s my own inside joke at making fun of my new laptop).

The machine hacking doesn’t surprise me. I saw a news special on it the other night and a hacker showed how easy it was to break into those machines.

I voted early, and I MADE sure my vote was correct, like I always do. There is a lot of blame being thrown around….to hackers to government corruption (paying people off) to blaming it on the seniors who may or may not be able to read so well.

I would say it’s government corruption at it’s sleaziest. My mom said it’s a last ditch effort for Republicans to cheat their way back into office, since they know Obama is still ahead, at least in the popular votes. I wouldn’t doubt it.

Like Nanner said, people need to MAKE SURE that they are voting for the right candidate, whoever it is. And if they have a SHRED of doubt, then that’s what the poll workers are for!

I am also tired of the West Virginia always being put down like a bunch of ignorant rednecks. Sure, we have our rednecks but doesn’t every state? I love good redneck jokes but when WV is constantly being stereotyped that way it gets old.

Then again it doesn’t help the fact that a lot of people in WV voted for Hillary because they didn’t “want a black man in office.” It’s even worse when you see these interviews on the news. I was like “Yeah, now THAT is a good way to improve our state’s image!”

rjjrdq, I checked that out. Sad that any political party would allow these machines to be used.

Pan, no shit girl. Luckily, I have my own and I’ll vote my own way.

Marie, yep! I updated with that fact this morning. I e-mailed the governor and the Sec. of State. I haven’t heard anything but, then again, when do I?

ETW, I’m always extremely careful when it comes to voting but some people just want to get in and get out. Should it be that effing hard for us to vote???

    Beanie, you said it girl.

    No Man,
We’re going all the way this time! I voted today, and Tennessee may go RED, but…. maybe NOT. I am BAFFLED at the people who would even consider continuing with the status quo…. It’s no good, no good in it… I’ve been bitching about this for the last 8 years. We need to grow a brain before ( because I have no FU#$IN insurance, and have diabetes type 2, and am going blind in my left eye) SOME of us DIE from the nasty filthy healthcare system our country (provides???) what ever….

Oh and thanks for letting me vent… sorry if I pissed anybody off.

Frank Herbert (of Dune fame) had the best quote concerning this. It’s not that absolute power corrupts absolutely, but absolute power attracts the absolutely corruptible. That’s my feeling on politicians these days.
